Sad would never be a typical upside down “u” shape with some eyebrow rotation, joy would never just be a simple grin showing teeth, there’s always something else like teary eyes, mouth wrinkles or nostril flaring happening along with distorted shaping of specific facial features. This made sure to keep things fun and interesting at all times, and complimented the insane plot occurring with the characters. Every frame on the show is almost always drawn in an extreme manner without recycling a previous expression. However it’s my opinion that the show’s writing is not it’s strongest aspect, and as I got older I realized the animation itself was the core reason I would watch episodes back to back. The most noteworthy and influential of all these cartoons would arguably be the cult classic Ren & Stimpy Show. While I feel like Cartoon Network generally has the best shows to use as inspirational material for trying to make a successful animation series, there was one cartoon series on Nickelodeon that was absolutely like nothing else at the time.

Stepping away from cartoons driven specifically to simply sell toys (He-Man, Transformers) the 90s saw the rise of The Simpsons, Disney stepping into the world of animated television, the beginnings of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon starting to open its doors to animators (of which their animated shows would be branded as NickToons.) For me personally the two channels I only cared about while growing up were Cartoon Network and NickToons, with more of my bias being towards Cartoon Network thanks to simply having more shows (Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, etc) that appealed to me. The 1990s was an interesting time for television cartoons.
